The Guide
How to wear a lungi
Five steps. No knot, no belt, no fuss.
- 1
Start at the waist
Hold the lungi behind you at waist level, one end in each hand. Bring both ends around to the front so the fabric wraps your waist fully.
- 2
Overlap in front
Overlap the two ends in front of you — right over left is the common way, but either works. The overlap should sit flat against your stomach.
- 3
Fold the top down
Fold the top edge of the fabric down over itself twice, rolling it snugly at the waist. The fold grips itself — no belt, no knot needed.
- 4
Check the length
The hem should fall around the ankle. If it's long, fold the waistband over once more. If it's short, let the fold out a little.
- 5
Move freely
For walking or work, lift the hem and tuck a pleat at the front or back to shorten it. Let it down again when you want the full drape.
Styling it
Everyday
A checked or plain cotton lungi with a simple t-shirt or shirt. Comfort first.
Festive
Colour with a gold or contrast border, paired with a crisp shirt. The border does the talking.
Formal & weddings
Pure white with a gold border and a pressed white shirt — a classic that never misses.
